The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) yesterday dismissed speculations that the union is calling off its strike today, saying “there was no plan to call off the strike on Thursday June 12.”
National President of the union, Mr Chibuzo Asomugha told

Our grapevine on phone yesterday that “I don’t know about calling off of our strike tomorrow,
(today). We are just having our regular emergency NEC meeting on Thursday June 12 and maybe that is where the rumours emanated.”

Polytechnics lecturers have been on strike since October 4, 2013 demanding for the constitution of the Governing Councils of Federal Polytechnics, the migration of the lower cadres on the CONTISS 15 salary scale, the release of the White Paper on the visitations to Federal Polytechnics, and the need for the commencement of the Needs Assessment of Nigerian Polytechnics.

He said: “We don’t have any plan to call off the strike until all our demands are fulfilled by the federal government.

Asomugha however said the executives of the union are to meet with government delegation on June 24, stressing that tomorrow’s been purely ASUP’s business.

Several meetings were earlier held between the striking lecturers and government delegation led by the Supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike but all ended in deadlocks.
